Apr 19 Rebuilding a Community Home, Mattie Freeland Community House Opens
Residents of English Avenue recently gathered to honor neighborhood hero Mattie Freeland by transforming a once abandoned home into a community center for the neighborhood.
For over 60 years, Freeland served as someone who provided hope and optimism for a community that is often overshadowed by negative news coverage.
Before her death in 2008, Ms. Mattie was known for watching over the neighborhood children, providing a safe couch to sleep on, an after-school gathering place for the youth in need, and much more all inside of her home located at the corner Dalvigney Street and English Avenue in Northwest Atlanta.
The new community home will provide a safe gathering spot, student and adult educational assistance, and host community meetings. It is a completely community-led creation of a park and community center symbolizing everything Mattie Freeland embodied; hope, healing and support.
