Russell was proud to be a part of the design/build team on this landmark museum in Birmingham, Alabama. The museum is noted for the long, gently climbing stairs leading to its distinct standing-seam dome roof. The clever design of the entrance walkway leads visitors on a long, slow climb to reach their destination, symbolic of the civil rights struggle in this country and around the world. The institute consists of two stories and 64,000 sq. ft. of museum/exhibit hall space with a circular community meeting hall. The exterior is brick veneer with architectural pre-cast and spandrel panels.
