Throughout H. J. Russell & Company’s history, we’ve successfully completed numerous projects where there were “firsts.” At Russell, we welcome each new challenge and complex project because it continues to sharpen our skills, build expertise and strengthen our commitment to community—wherever we work.

Such is the case at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, where Russell, along with joint venture partners Archer Western and Phillips/May plus PGAL, are performing what’s never been known to be done before in aviation history. The team is using prefabricated modular envelopes (shell and core)—built off-site on airport property—to construct the new five gates comprising Terminal C. By utilizing prefabricated modules, DFW will have a 20% savings in the overall project schedule. The new 80,000 sq. ft. domestic flight terminal is anticipated to accommodate four to five narrow-body aircraft or regional jets.

“This project tested traditional construction in aviation,” said Melissa Williams, Russell’s Assistant Project Manager. “We accomplished what didn’t seem possible considering all the current market constraints, but when it was all said and done, we turned doubters into believers with this project.”

In September, the last of the modules—simple, boxy rooms made of concrete, glass and steel but weighing over 500 tons each—could be seen crawling in the middle of the night across the tarmac before installation at Terminal C. (Watch the video here.) The gate interiors will be completed in 2022.
